In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, two sisters seized their opportunity to open a new retail business in Galveston’s central business district. Becky Palmer, from Spring, Texas, and her local sister, Tammie Taylor, opened the doors to Antiques on Winnie, September 30, 2017. Today their business, aptly located on Winnie between 23rd and 24th streets, is thriving. Tourists and locals alike have deemed the store a “must stop” when antiquing in Galveston.
“We love meeting customers from all over Texas and beyond,” said Palmer, “but it’s really great to be appreciated by your local patrons too.”
Antiques on Winnie has become a favorite spot on the Galveston Art Center’s Artwalk. The store stays open until 9 pm on Artwalk nights, and offers customers complimentary hors d'oeuvres, champagne punch and a selection of wines.
“Artwalk is always a really festive time around here,” explains Taylor. “We have fun preparing delicious bites and drinks to share with our customers, and we end up having a great evening selling antiques and visiting with friends, old and new.”
The next Artwalk is Saturday, October 13, which will also be the date Antiques on Winnie hosts its one year anniversary celebration. Palmer and Taylor have plans to serve food and beverages all day and say they are working out details for more fun, so check out their website or Facebook page for the latest.
“We are so happy and really proud to mark a year of success in our business,” said Taylor. Palmer added, “We’re excited to build on the great start we’ve had, and we look forward to an even bigger and better second year.”
The store features a wide variety of constantly changing merchandise creatively curated by the two sisters, along with their friend and long-time local antique dealer Jo Mooney. The three of them work hard to bring their customers outstanding, quality furniture, glassware and china, collectibles from old bottles to rosaries, vintage books, albums and clothing, Galveston souvenirs and treasures – something to fit most any budget or style.
Antiques on Winnie is a traditional retail antique store, located in the heart of downtown Galveston, at 2323 Winnie. The store is open daily, Thursday – Monday, 10-6.
With every ending comes a new opportunity, and we are so grateful for a fresh start at our own antique store!
For years we dreamed of owning and operating an antique mall on Galveston Island. When Hurricane Harvey devastated the Gulf Coast and damaged our former store, we lost electricity and inventory, but never our spirit. For as the saying goes, when God closes (or in this case, sends debris flying through) a door, He opens a window.
This week we could not be more excited and grateful to open Antiques on Winnie, Galveston's newest shop for vintage clothing, vintage linens, old books, antique souvenirs, religious icons, furniture, Depression Glass, china, toys, games, and so much more. Whether local or tourist, we offer something for everyone.
We hope to see you at our Soft Opening on September 30, 2017!
